But&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?attachment_id=3745\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3745\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3745\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-Gold-llama-FB-861x1030-1-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-Gold-llama-FB-861x1030-1-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-Gold-llama-FB-861x1030-1-856x1024.jpg 856w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-Gold-llama-FB-861x1030-1-768x919.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-Gold-llama-FB-861x1030-1.jpg 861w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a>A big new show about Peru has just opened at the British Museum<\/strong> to showcase the almost four millennia of Peruvian civilisation that preceded the destructive arrival of the Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first at the museum since almost the Second World War, so quite a moment to have a look at the Incas and their predecessors.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pleased to report that thanks to energetic and intelligent curatorship from <strong>Jago Cooper<\/strong> (known to TV audiences for his work on presenting Latin American archaeology) and <strong>Cecilia Pardo<\/strong>, this is a triumphant success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That said, the curators have their work cut out<\/strong>. Although using some of the central main space in the British Museum, it\u2019s a smaller show than others have been, so needs to be concentrated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And I know only too well from my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?page_id=157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cochineal Red<\/em><\/a> book<\/strong> &#8211; being sold alongside the exhibition &#8211; \u00a0the challenges already involved in trying to present the huge span of Peruvian prehistory to an audience who may be unfamiliar with the route map of the rise and fall of its civilisations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I like the way the curators have pitched this. It does not take the Ladybird \u2018Peru is a country a long way away\u2019 approach of some recent, painfully patronising shows. Item descriptions are precise and sophisticated. \u00a0Nor is it painfully woke \u2013 although the attempt to suggest that Nasca women were being empowered towards the end of that civilisation because they were sometimes depicted underneath their men in the missionary position is perhaps an argument too far.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>while on gender representation<\/strong>, they have shied away from the more erotic of Moche ceramics (displayed in an adults-only gallery at one Lima Museum) in favour of a concentration on Moche sacrificial practices which while also good box office reminded me of Angela Carter\u2019s line about one of her films &#8211; that she would have preferred <strong>\u2018more sex and less violence\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3738\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?attachment_id=3738\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3738\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3738 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_122452-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_122452-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_122452-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_122452-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_122452-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_122452-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">tunic stitched with hummingbird feathers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still, some fabulous items have been cherrypicked:<strong> a tunic stitched with hummingbird feathers<\/strong> of the sort that Atahualpa may have worn; <strong>a necklace studded with gems made from conch shells<\/strong> (the &#8216;first contact&#8217; the Spanish made with the Incas was when they encountered a boat looking for such valued shells in the Pacific); <strong>a pestle and mortar\u00a0<\/strong><strong>used by<\/strong> <strong>Chav\u00edn shamen <\/strong>to grind their hallucinogenic snuff, with distorted jaguar motifs which must have been powerfully disturbing when the drugs took effect.<\/p>\n<p>I liked the witty inclusion of items like the Moche ceramic representation of a weaver holding up a cloth for inspection, as if to get it passed for approval. Most unusual of all are some <strong>wooden figures showing naked prisoners about to be sacrificed in the Moche style<\/strong>, which were recovered for the British Museum in the 19th century from a heap of guano, when the guano was being mined for fertiliser. The guano had preserved the wood in a way few other substances would.<\/p>\n<p>The show draws on the recent triumphs of curatorship in Peru where museums like MALI have mounted some fabulous shows in Lima.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?attachment_id=3736\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3736\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3736\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-1152x2048.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211110_133205-2-scaled.jpg 1441w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a>But while some objects have come from Peru, around 60% of the exhibits come from the basements of the British Museum and herein does lie a question (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?p=1148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one I have asked before, ten years ago, to no great effect<\/a>). Which is <strong>why the British Museum does not have a permanent gallery devoted to South America in the same way it does to Central America, North America and indeed just about every other continent?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Part of the answers is historical and administrative \u2013 many of the South American holdings were displayed in the old Museum of Mankind by Burlington Arcade and when that was dissolved, did not find a home.
