And I came here for the most agreeable of reasons \u2013 to launch a new book,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Traveling-Cortes-Pizarro-Discovering-Pre-Columbian\/dp\/8874398085\/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8\"> Travelling With Cortes<\/a>, a handsomely illustrated catalogue of artwork from the Stuart Handler collection which Yale University Press are distributing; I wrote the essays for it.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>So as my duties are light \u2013 a launch dinner at Gibson\u2019s, the Chicago institution where my friends in the city tell me you\u2019d be stupid not to have the steak \u2013 there is plenty of time to absorb <strong>some unexpected architectural delights<\/strong>: the wild owls and scrollwork on the roof of the central Chicago library; the grill on what is now a Target department store; a US mailbox in silver; a light fitting out of a Terry Gilliam film. The pleasures are endless \u2013 compounded by more obvious attractions like one of Alexander Calder\u2019s finest sculptures, a public auditorium by Frank Gehry and the Lakeside Drive.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?attachment_id=3274\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3274\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3274 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180625_210001-Chicago-mural-above-South-Loop-Club-1-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180625_210001-Chicago-mural-above-South-Loop-Club-1-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180625_210001-Chicago-mural-above-South-Loop-Club-1-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180625_210001-Chicago-mural-above-South-Loop-Club-1-576x1024.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>.On my final evening, I go to <strong>Buddy Guy\u2019s Blues Club<\/strong>, another institution, where, to my surprise, the very funky band are covering, of all things, the Steely Dan songbook \u2013 and making it sound fantastic. Although after a dirty dry Martini or two, and several Blue Moons, I am in a receptive mood.<\/p>\n<p>What a great city. I can see why Sinatra once sang: \u201cthey have the time, the time of their life \/ I saw a man \u2013 he danced with his wife! \/ In Chicago, Chicago, my home town\u2026\u2019 In fact, it wasn\u2019t his hometown.
