{"id":2881,"date":"2016-03-06T13:07:14","date_gmt":"2016-03-06T12:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?p=2881"},"modified":"2016-03-06T13:07:14","modified_gmt":"2016-03-06T12:07:14","slug":"a-walk-in-the-woods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?p=2881","title":{"rendered":"A Walk In The Woods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?attachment_id=2882\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2882\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/A_Walk_in_the_Woods_Poster-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"A_Walk_in_the_Woods_Poster\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/A_Walk_in_the_Woods_Poster-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/A_Walk_in_the_Woods_Poster.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A Walk In The Woods <\/em>is a curious film and proposition.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Bryson wrote his book in the 1990s, when he himself was in his 40s\u00a0like\u00a0his friend Katz, with whom he makes this journey along the Appalachian Way.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Redford wanted to turn this into a movie &#8211; but with himself playing Bryson, despite the fact that Redford is in his late 70s and looks absolutely nothing like the bearded writer.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the incongruity, critics have been a little unkind to it, as it\u2019s worth watching for the gentle humour with which things unfold &#8211; and gentle humour is a rare commodity in movies these days.\u00a0 Also, the film &#8211; and the Bill Bryson character &#8211; are lucky enough to have Emma Thompson as a (much younger) wife, who always brings some welcome asperity and wit to proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is less filmic than a man walking or hiking slowly across landscape &#8211; which is why movie-makers since the time of John Ford always try to get them on a horse, wagon or fast moving car.\u00a0 When I was making travel documentaries myself, I always used to dread the bits when my presenter would ponderously stumble along with a backpack.<\/p>\n<p>But the filmmakers make a decent fist of it here and if it is all a tad inconsequential &#8211; particularly the jeopardy moment when they fall off a very small \u2018cliff\u2019 and think themselves stranded &#8211; there\u2019s a slow, loping charm which is very much like the act of walking across such a\u00a0landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>.
