\"\"To see Ryan Adams at the Hammersmith Apollo<\/a>, scene of many a great concert in the past when it was the Odeon.\u00a0 When I first went in 1974 (the year\u00a0Adams was born), there was a new support band called Queen who no one had ever heard of and we thought a bit much, while we waited for the main band \u2013 Mott the Hoople and ‘All the Young Dudes’\u2026\u00a0 Years later I interviewed Mick Ronson there just before he died, for my Dancing in the Street<\/a> series, and he reminisced about Bowie’s \u2018Ziggy retirement concert\u2019, and played solo for us<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ryan Adams has turned into a singer of real stature (although not in actual height \u2013 he looks like a shaggier version of Frodo) \u2013 after many a wayward twist and turn since the days of Gold<\/em> and \u2018New York, New York\u2019 which first brought him fame. \u00a0His new album, just called Ryan Adams<\/em>, although about his 14th (give or take a record company reject), feels like he\u2019s found his voice \u2013 and guitar \u2013 again<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the past, his very facility for writing songs \u2013 he turns the heckles of one punter into an instant song, a neat party trick I\u2019ve heard him play before but one that exemplifies this weakness \u2013 means that he produces too much;\u00a0 but these song feel heartfelt.\u00a0 I suspect he\u2019s this generation\u2019s Neil Young \u2013 prolific, occasionally brilliant, sometimes infuriating and veering between acoustic and electric to great effect.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s joined by his support act Natalie Prass for a couple of well matched duets, including a showstopping \u2018Oh My Sweet Carolina\u2019, and gets even the most jaded of London\u2019s spoilt-for-choice rock audience singing along to \u2018When the Stars Go Blue\u2019.\u00a0 Oh, and he keeps talking about \u2018dudes\u2019 on stage.\u00a0 Which no one else has done since Ian Hunter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NB – The footage of Mick Ronson playing solo for us in the stalls at Hammersmith Odeon was played back at the memorial concert held at the Odeon for him when he died in 1993, shortly after the interview was recorded: \u00a0a strange and ghostly moment. \u00a0Ronson was a charming and honest man, and still undervalued. \u00a0Quite apart from his transformative work with Bowie and Lou Reed, he had also just reinvigorated Morrissey’s career with the excellent Your Arsenal<\/em> album that for the first time made the petulant one\u00a0a star in the States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
