{"id":2128,"date":"2013-03-11T19:08:16","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T18:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?p=2128"},"modified":"2013-03-15T09:31:39","modified_gmt":"2013-03-15T08:31:39","slug":"panspermia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thewhiterock.co.uk\/?p=2128","title":{"rendered":"Panspermia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ4kvIXWq7Si491hAKJgl96dcEeQl61X4NU7zk5BIQ86fL72-vQzw\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/>I&#8217;ve always been fascinated by the idea of panspermia: the theory that Fred Hoyle and others put forward almost 30 years ago that &#8211; very broadly put &#8211; life was distributed across the universe by meteorites.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s often been ridiculed by other astronomers and physicists \u2013 let alone biologists &#8211; for being simplistic, but that surely is part of the charm: we should look for an elegant simplicity in our scientific solutions.<\/p>\n<p>So the news that scientists, including a former colleague of Fred Hoyle&#8217;s, have identified biological matter in the heart of a meteorite that recently landed in Sri Lanka, in December, should have attracted much greater attention than it has.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/view\/512381\/astrobiologists-find-ancient-fossils-in-fireball-fragments\/\" target=\"_blank\">This judicious and weighted article in the August <i>M.I.T Technology Review <\/i><\/a>puts the case.<\/p>\n<p>My more frivolous case for panspermia is below:are<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">The first Big Bang:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">panspermia flood<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">through space, lactating<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">fireworks against the black;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">meteorites cross-pollinate<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">between planets,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">extremophile bacteria<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">clinging to the rocks<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">like a rodeo:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u2018yi-haaaaaah!\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">The Earth got lucky \u2013<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">we were fertilised.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">But what I want<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">to ask the Universe<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">is this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><i>\u2018How was it for you?\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve always been fascinated by the idea of panspermia: the theory that Fred Hoyle and others put forward almost 30 years ago that &#8211; very broadly put &#8211; life was distributed across the universe by meteorites.
