An expedition to a remote part of the Himalayas resulted in Nanda Devi: A Journey\u00a0to the Last Sanctuary<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

He \u00a0returned to Peru for Cochineal Red<\/strong><\/a> which investigated \u00a0the earliest beginnings\u00a0of Andean civilisation.<\/p>\n

There followed Tequila Oil<\/a><\/strong>, an account of ‘getting lost in Mexico’ when young, which was serialised by BBC\u00a0Radio 4.<\/p>\n

Then came The Green Road into the Trees:\u00a0 An Exploration of England <\/a><\/strong>(Preface \/ Random House)
\n<\/strong>which returned him to his home country and won The Wainwright Prize<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hugh introduced, edited and illustrated a new edition of Lost City of the Incas<\/strong>,
\nHiram Bingham’s classic account of first discovering Machu Picchu in 1911.
\nPublished by Weidenfeld & Nicolson <\/a>in both large format hardback and paperback.<\/p>\n

A centenary version of this edition was reissued in 2011 to mark the 100th anniversary
\nof Bingham’s discovery of Machu Picchu, with a further essay by Hugh on Bingham’s photographs.<\/p>\n
